Parkvale Catchment Charitable Trust
The Parkvale Catchment Charitable Trust was formed in 2021 with a vision for healthy water, land and people growing together.
The Trust's goal is to inform and support landowners within the Parkvale Catchment to understand and meet national and regional regulations and celebrate the good work that is being done throughout the catchment.
Location
The Parkvale catchment area is large and complex, with about 300km of water races as well as many streams and tributaries.
The land use is also varied with farming in the area and various types of industries and a large number of lifestyle blocks.
Vision
Healthy water, land and people, growing together.
Outcomes
Clean waterways.
Increased engagement across the catchment.
All landowners in the catchment know who we are.
The group is part of education for schools and community.
Increased native birds.
Projects

Water quality monitoring
The Trust will utilise monitoring data from Greater Wellington Regional Council to better understand the sources of nitrate in the catchment. With improved insight into the issues, the group will determine what additional monitoring is required.

Fencing and planting
The Trust plans to collaborate with Greater Wellington, the water race committee, and local landowners to assess how much of the catchment is currently fenced and planted. This will help identify areas that require stock exclusion and riparian planting to protect waterways.

Wetland restoration
Recognising the vital role wetlands play in improving water quality, the Trust aims to work with Greater Wellington to identify opportunities for creating and enhancing wetlands throughout the catchment.

Habitat enhancement
The Trust plans to identify native bird species present in the area and create riparian corridors that provide suitable habitat. They will also assess current trapping and predator control efforts and work in partnership to strengthen and expand these initiatives.

Community engagement
The Trust is committed to ensuring that all landowners in the catchment are aware of who they are and what they do. To support this, they will focus on school engagement and education, installing signs throughout the catchment, producing a biannual newsletter, and hosting community events.

School engagement
Tamariki are the future stewards of local biodiversity and freshwater health. The Trust is currently working with St Mary’s School to plant wetlands and riparian margins while educating students on the importance of planting for freshwater outcomes. They aim to build on this relationship and involve other schools in the Carterton area.
